Getting There

Portugal has airports at Faro, Lisbon and Porto, but most flights operate out of the first two.

Flights to Faro from London and regional airports in the UK run on a daily basis.

Flight times are around two hours and 40 minutes, and airlines include BA, easyjet, TAP, BMI Baby and Monarch

Portuguese fare is deliciously uncomplicated. Grilled chicken, roast suckling pig or chinks of dense chewy bread dipped in olive oil.

Seafood is common place: the national dish is bacalhau (salted cod) but anything that swims is fair game for the dinner table.

The country produces some lovely wines – and or course, there’s Port.

The Algarve is mild in the winter with the mercury hitting 13oC (55oF), while the summers are hot 28oC (82oF).

On the Silver Coast, the further north you go the wetter and cooler the weather becomes.
